Mauritius was created by volcanic activity some 10 million years ago. There has been no active volcano on the island for more than 100,000 years. Shaped like a pear, the island is 61 kilometers long and 46 kilometres wide at the extreme, it has a total land area of 1,865 square kilometres The central plateau reaches 600M in altitude with the highest peak, le Piton de la Rivière Noire, rising to 827M above sea level. The coastline of 1600 Kms is almost entirely surrounded by one of the largest unbroken coral reefs in the world. In summer, from November to April, the temperature varies from 25ºC to 35ºC. The hours of daylight are approximately from 05.30 to 19.00 in summer and 06.00 to 18.00 in winter. The cyclonic season is between November and March. Port Louis is the economic and administrative capital city. It is also a modern, well-equipped and efficiently operated port. Rodrigues Island, 560 Kms in the North-East, also forms part of the Republic of Mauritius. Mauritius officially includes also the islands Agalega and Saint Brandon. Tourism plays an important role in the development of the island and causes the island to accentuate on other interesting activities like the eco-tourism. This is demonstrated in "Things To Do" and "What To See" Tab such as the trekking in the mountains or natural parks, canyoning, zip lining, golf, team building, nordic walking, quad, horse riding, regatta, kite surfing, raid ventures, driving expeditions, deep sea fishing, cycling in the sugar cane fields, safaris, catamaran and many more. Mauritius, besides the hotels, offers also guest houses, self catering accommodations, bungalows, studios, villas, vacation rentals or apartments at very reasonable prices... |
